When I was young, my parents introduced us to Geocaching. It is essentially treasure hunting!! Users across the world hide boxes, tiny jars, or tubes, and document where the coordinates are within the Geocaching site and then everyone who is on the site can see all of the hidden items and go find them!
I find most of these hidden treasures are in parks or nature walks which is a great excuse to get out of the house and an excellent family fun day. I remember the excitement of finding these when I was younger! My Mom told me today that we used to even do it when we went on vacation! How cool is that?
I downloaded the app “Geocaching”, looked at a local park – and saw 12 hidden caches! We decided to take the kiddos out to find them all. Now first off I will state that there are two versions to this app, the free version that gives you access to many caches, but if you are looking to upgrade to premium you do get access to a lot of other caches- it was $6.99/mo so I paid it and plan to cancel when the kids lose interest haha.

The app allows you to select the cache you are looking for and navigates you to the area. So you can drive your car (while someone else is navigating) and once you park there is a compass button that you then use to walk you to the exact place. This is the super fun part that the kids love the most.
The treasure boxes sometimes includes actual little toys and trinkets that you can take out of the box, but as a common courtesy- its nice to replace the items with another small trinket. It can be something funny, and worthless, or a cool coin etc.
For our first adventure we went to our local Chain of Lakes park and searched for a total of 6. This is one of my favorite parks, a lot of room to bike, walk, or run. Can’t beat some of these peaceful views. Pictures courtesy of my Mama!
The first and third ones we couldn’t find. Its possible someone took them or they fell from their hiding places due to the recent hurricanes. When you either locate them or not you log them within the app, so you can see my sad faces and happy faces for the ones we found. But here are some pictures of ones that we did find!
After getting home today – I looked up some different supplies we can get for making our own Cache and Amazon has a lot to offer! Check them out here!
We are thinking about coming up with a target of finding so many during the year of 2023. 50? 100? Once we decide we will let you know! 🙂
