Derrick has always had a green thumb. He probably wishes that he would have asked me more plant related questions before we got married so that he knew about my brown thumb. Our first house was a perfect starter home. It didn’t have a large plot but enough room for my kids and animals to not be completely on top of each other.

It was at this house that my husband decided he wanted a large garden. I loved the idea because I have never had one and who doesn’t like free food? My best guess is that this was all back in 2012.

The placement of the garden was tricky because we needed the right sunlight and wanted it where we could see it from the house. We had this little area of land in our front yard and so.. why the heck not? Let’s do a garden in our front yard! There was a lot of worry about people stopping and stealing things.. but honestly- that just never was an issue.

We dug the whole area up, which was the first time I have ever used a cultivator. Was learning all kinds of new things. Added rows of mounds and threw in all the random plants we thought we wanted. Blueberry bushes, corn, herbs, tomatoes, peppers.. the list goes on.

My favorite part about the garden was it’s beauty! We found these cute little plastic pick fences and added them around the whole thing and then with about a foot to the concrete, we planted wildflowers around the whole parameter.

The way my husband tells it {which is not true} he went away for a weekend and came back and the whole garden was dead because I hadn’t watered it like he had asked. It is true that he went away for like 3 days.. and it is true that I didn’t water it. But no way did the whole garden die because I didn’t water it…. maybe just like 1/2 of it :).

Years and years later, we have a much bigger plot and our garden is huge {to me}. It definitely isn’t as pretty as what we had back then but it sure if more functional and its growing things I will eat!
