Does anyone else’s kids watch constant YouTube channels where kids are doing challenges? All kinds of challenges. The secret food challenge. The shopping challenge. How many toy cars can you stuff in your nose challenge. TONS of challenges for families. Then there are my kids.. living their normal life without shopping sprees or tons of food to just waste by baking the ugliest cake possible. They tend to find ways to slide in a comment like.. “Oh, it’s just the XYZ family purchased tons of blow up slides to put in there house.. and that’s how they spend time together.”

Really? Way to make a Mama feel like she’s not doing enough, not being creative enough, not throwing enough money out the window.– Don’t worry guys. I don’t get TOO hard on myself. I quickly remember all of those families are doing things for likes and to make money off of their channel. Its a business and they have targeted the perfect audience. My child! haha.

Well I finally came up with a challenge that I can afford, support, and also not feel like I am ruining my children by doing! It’s the Family Misfits Market Challenge! I know… I probably should have come up with a more creative name but ehh .. it’s all I have right now.

What is Misfits Market?

To sum it up, Misfits Market is a company that partners with organic growers and puts together variety boxes of excess fruits and veggies. Sometimes the veggies aren’t perfect so they can’t be sold in grocery stores. Well who only eats perfect food? Right, none of us- so Misfits can save that food and bring it to your doorstep by purchasing a non-contract subscription. They have 2 size boxes and you can decide when to get your box, how often, and even skip weeks if you want. These are all of the things that mean something to me so that is why I was sold.

So whats the challenge?

Here is the deal- I was referred to sign up for Misfits Market by my family, and I couldn’t stand the excitement of waiting for my box. What kinds of veggies, what kinds of fruits?? If you don’t specify, then its a surprise!

My children are picky eaters. Not the kind that make any sense.. its like convenience eating. “Oh, I have never liked cheese.” or “I just don’t like the texture of bread”. Yeah.. those kids. So I need a way to get them excited to try something new. I didn’t tell them about the challenge until we got our box, today! I explained that our goal is to cook and eat EVERYTHING in the box before we get our new box. No matter what it is. We are going to try it all! Not sure why they were excited, but I was happy they were on board.

I let them unbox it with me and guess what each item was! In our first box (we picked the ‘Madness’ size), we received:

  • Kale (Lots of kale!)
  • Granny Smith Apples – which our family already loves
  • Head of lettuce
  • Zucchini
  • Beets
  • Oranges
  • Blood Red Oranges
  • Potatoes
  • Butternut squash
  • Turnup
  • Rutabaga

Now to embarrass myself as a parent… as a family we have not even tried Beets, Butternut squash, Turnups, or Rutabaga! In fact, I had to text my aunt to find out what they even were. So this box is PERFECT for our very first challenge. Between now and our next box (2 weeks) we have to eat it all somehow incorporated into meals or just as snacks.

Challenge Accepted!

Our first meal is incorporating Rutabagas. We are going to roast them along with our potatoes.
